Viareggio – the Lignano of Tuscany

To be honest … we wouldn’t plan a beach holiday in Viareggio for several days. However, nothing speaks against a short stopover on the coast during a tour through Tuscany ๐Ÿ˜‰

Viareggio is a popular seaside resort in Tuscany. The gray sea water didn’t really convince us, but this place is a great starting point for exploring the cities Lucca and Pisa.

We stayed at the Hotel Versilia Lido | UNA Esperienze and can absolutely recommend this accommodation. The hotel would have provided beach chairs, but this time we actually preferred the hotel pool as an exception ๐Ÿ˜

We can also warmly recommend the hotel’s rooftop restaurant.

Although the beach area looks very well-kept, we couldn’t really get used to the gray, troubled sea water. However, it is very suitable for long walks on the beach.

If you walk in the direction of Viareggio, after about 20 minutes you will come to a long jetty called “Pontile di Lido di Camaiore”. There is a small bar where you can have an aperitif with a nice view. Typically for Italy, you get a lot of snacks served with your drink (these are of course included in the price ๐Ÿ˜‰).

If you are still hungry afterwards, don’t panic, there are plenty of restaurants on the 2 kilometer long beach promenade “Pontile Lungomare Europa”. Our favorite was the Ristorante Universo 24. From seafood to pizza and pasta everything is offered there.

Our personal opinion about Viareggio:

  • very touristy
  • well suited as a starting point for explorations
  • we would not recommend this area for a beach holiday
  • culinary – everything your heart desires

Best travel time:

We recommend June to September for beach holidays, but spring and autumn for sightseeing in this area.

More tips & recommendations:

Lucca and Pisa are only 30 minutes away by car and are absolutely worth seeing. We recommend exploring in the morning and relaxing in the afternoon.

On weekends and in the high season, table reservations should be made for the evening. Unfortunately, we had overlooked that a bit and therefore couldn’t get a table in a few restaurants that we were interested.
