At first we weren’t sure whether we should take the trip to Fraser Island, it wasn’t really on our route. However, you don’t have the opportunity to explore the largest sand island in the world every day π
The starting point for exploring Fraser Island is the town Harvey Bay, about 300 km north of Brisbane. We stayed at the Oaks Resort & Spa. A few steps away is the 868 meter long Urangan Pier.
Apart from that, to be honest, not much is going on in this area. That didn’t really bother us, as the main reason for our stay was of course the trip to Fraser Island.
The next day we were taken to Fraser Island by boat, from there we continued with the tour bus.
Some tourists also came with their own SUV, but we cannot really recommend this due to the road conditions on the island (find out more about this in our video below).
Our first stop was Lake McKenzie, a freshwater lake on Fraser Island (1200 meters long and up to 930 meters wide).
Lake McKenzie
After a short walk through the island’s rainforest, we continued to 75 Mile Beach with the shipwreck of the S.S. Maheno.
The highlight of the day, however, was when a dingo ventured out of the bushes in the late afternoon and trotted past our bus π
With the evening sun on our faces, we sailed back to Hervey Bay. The trip had paid off, we had a few more impressions and were now looking forward to our next destination on our tour through Australia.
Our personal opinion about Hervey Bay / Fraser Island:
- Fraser Island is an almost untouched piece of earth.
- We had completely underestimated the distances on the island.
- We found Hervey Bay less exciting, but a great starting point for trips to Fraser Island.
On the following pages you can get a very good overview about Australia:
Best travel time:
The weather on Fraser Island is good all year round. Most of the rain falls in the months of December to March.

More tips & recommendations:
Whether it is better to drive to Fraser Island in your own SUV or to book an excursion, everyone has to decide for themselves. We didn’t have our own vehicle, so the day trip was the best option for us, which we can absolutely recommend. If you are traveling with your own vehicle, however, you should definitely be a confident driver, the roads are sometimes a disaster and we had seen many cars stuck.
However, you can see for yourself in our video about Fraser Island. Have fun watching π
