We were torn … Gold Coast or Byron Bay? Unfortunately, we didn’t have the time for either. The decision finally fell on Byron Bay, as this place seemed much more chilled to us than the Gold Coast, which is paved with skyscrapers. We shouldn’t regret it ๐
With the rental car we drove south from Brisbane to Byron Bay. One car breakdown later – a nail in the car tire ๐ณ – we had already arrived.
We quickly realized that this coastal town was relatively manageable. The most important thing happened on the beach ๐ Especially in the late afternoon, many locals came with their surfboards and enjoyed the waves until sunset. Surfer watching has quickly become one of our favorite things to do in Byron Bay.
Another MUST is the walk to Cape Byron Lighthouse, the most easterly point on mainland Australia. It is located about three kilometers northeast of Byron Bay and can therefore be reached on foot in about 45 minutes. The sweaty ascent definitely pays off, you can enjoy a wonderful view.
The route to the lighthouse was perfect for our morning run ๐ Afterwards we could enjoy a delicious breakfast in our favorite restaurant in Byron Bay without a guilty conscience ๐
During the day we either strolled through the streets of Byron Bay and explored the many shops or we just relaxed on the beach.
Our absolute highlight, however, was the atmosphere on the beach at sunset. We bought a bottle of Prosecco and some snacks and sat on the beach. That was probably one of the most relaxed evenings on all of our trips … the sound of the waves, the warmth of the setting sun … what more could you want ๐
Our personal opinion about Byron Bay:
- extremely chilled surf mecca
