When I was putting our Brazil tour together, I noticed that there were 2 unplanned days left. We didn’t think twice and booked a flight to neighboring Argentina, to Buenos Aires.
So we had 48 hours to get an overview of the metropolis of Buenos Aires. During this time, the following things could not be missing: Tango, steak and Argentinian wine 😊
For the sake of simplicity, we booked a guided half-day excursion in small groups, which took us to the highlights of the city. At the top of the list of sights should be “La Boca”, the most famous district of Buenos Aires.
La Boca was created in the late 19th century by European immigrants (mostly Italians) who were looking for a better life. They lived in simple, but brightly painted, corrugated iron houses “Conventillos” – today a popular photo motif.
Our tour continued to the Plaza de Mayo – the heart of Buenos Aires.
… and finally to the Floralis Genérica – the youngest landmark of Buenos Aires. The 23 m high sculpture made of steel and aluminum was a gift from the Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano to the capital.
In the afternoon we had no luck with the weather, so we spent our time in the Abasto Shopping Mall, where I picked out a great pair of shoes as a souvenir 😉
My new pair of high heels was also used on the same evening. On the recommendation of a dear friend from Buenos Aires, we booked 2 tickets for the famous Carlos Gardel Tango Show including a 3-course menu 😊
We spent our last day in Buenos Aires mainly at Puerto Madero and with food 😋
Puerto Madero is a port area on the banks of the RÃo de la Plata. There are plenty of restaurants along the docks.
Our personal opinion about Buenos Aires:
- Buenos Aires is huge and looks very European
- Meat lovers are in good hands here
- We liked Puerto Madero and La Boca best
Best travel time:
We would recommend the spring and autumn months (March-May and September-November). During this period it is neither too hot nor too cold and the precipitation is relatively low.
Hotel recommendation:
Hotel Regal Pacific Puerto Madero
Restaurant recommendation:
La Cabaña Restaurant – Puerto Madero
More tips & recommendations:
A variety of tango shows are offered in Buenos Aires. We cannot judge which of these is the best. We experienced the Carlos Gardel Tango Show and we can therefore recommend it. Of course these shows are very touristy, but that didn’t bother us. Tickets for this can be booked through various platforms.
