Happy Birthday sweetheart! I have a very special present for you … With these words Sven surprised me, he gave me a kiss and handed me a small package. Curious, I unpacked it straight away – it was a day of skiing followed by an igloo night. I was completely surprised and really looking forward to it, but I also had my concerns. Just thinking about a night in an igloo gave me goose bumps 🥶
And then … the day had come and we were sitting in the car in the direction of Mayrhofen in Tyrol. Unfortunately, we weren’t lucky with the weather, the view of the slopes was a disaster. We only drove up and down a few times and then made ourselves comfortable in the hut.
With the last ascent, we went up to the igloo hotel. Fortunately, the weather had improved and we had a clear view. As a welcome drink there was mulled wine & a short introduction. Then we were led to our igloo. It looked really cozy …
In the meantime everything was prepared for our dinner (fondue) in a communal igloo. We sat on blocks of ice covered with fur and ate fondue with gloves on. Even a few cups of mulled wine couldn’t warm me up and I feared the worst for the night 🥶
Salvation came after the meal. There was a sauna 😊 We spent the time before going to sleep alternately in the sauna and at the igloo bar.
Dog-tired we went to our igloo a few hours later. We were advised to crawl into the sleeping bag only with light clothing, even if it was very cold at first. Otherwise it would get too hot later in these special expedition sleeping bags and you would start to sweat. At first I couldn’t imagine it at all, but it got comfortably warm within a very short time. Cuddled up together, the night passed in a flash.
Only going to the toilet in the middle of the night was tedious. You had to dress completely again, get out into the cold and trudge a few meters to the mountain station …but you could enjoy the dead silence and the mountain panorama at an altitude of 2000 meters.
The next morning was absolutely clear. We had so regretted that we had already handed in our ski equipment the evening before. That would have been a perfect descent. We had to take the chairlift.
Our personal opinion about the igloo night:
The igloo hotel is breathtakingly beautifully embedded in the mountains. It was a unique experience that we probably won’t do a second time 😉 but who knows…
