Lake Neusiedl may not necessarily be the best choice for a bathing holiday, but water sports enthusiasts, wine lovers and cyclists will definitely get their money’s worth here. We opted for the latter… but we didn’t miss out on the enjoyment of wine either 😉
As a starting point we chose Podersdorf am See. This place offers accommodation, the possibility to rent bicycles and some wine taverns for the physical well-being.
We strongly recommend that you reserve bicycles in advance. In addition, e-bikes are definitely the better choice, even for the sporty among you. I’m one of those people who never thought they’d sit on an e-bike, but in the windy Lake Neusiedl area you make life unnecessarily difficult with normal bikes… 🤣 especially if you want to cover longer distances 😉
A little background knowledge before the fun starts…
Lake Neusiedl is one of the few steppe lakes in Europe and the largest lake with no outflow in Central Europe. It is predominantly on Austrian territory and to a lesser extent on Hungarian territory. Its Austrian portion makes it the largest Austrian lake in terms of surface area.
Shortly after breakfast we started our planned 80 km tour around Lake Neusiedl. The complete circumnavigation (120 km) seemed too stressful for a day trip, so we decided to take the bike ferry from Illmitz to Mörbisch and stay on the Austrian side of the lake.
As a short lunch stop, we recommend the charming town of Rust. During a short tour you can observe a lot of storks on the roofs.
Back in Podersdorf we had our bellies filled in one of the countless wine taverns. Of course, a few good glasses of wine should not be missing.
