We are among the lucky ones who have been able to marvel at Lake Cauma several times, but every time we look at it it takes our breath away. This turquoise mountain lake is idyllically embedded in a fir forest at an altitude of 1000 m 😍
When the heat becomes unbearable in midsummer, we are happy to pay a visit to Lake Cauma. The shady forest and the cool water of the mountain lake are a welcome refreshment. However, all other seasons have one big advantage … fewer tourists 🤣
A few details about Lake Cauma: It belongs to the municipality of Flims in the canton of Graubünden, is 600 m long, 300 m wide and a maximum of 30 m deep. The inflows and outflows of the Flims mountain lake are underground, with warmer water flowing in from a spring. Approximately in the middle of Lake Cauma lies a rocky island overgrown with mighty fir trees. You can go around the lake on a circular route in less than an hour.
On our last visit we undertook a circular hike to the nearby Crestasee and to the Il Spir viewing platform. This tour is also known as the “Forest & Water Culinary Trail” and can be completed in 3.5 hours (approx. 12 km). There is also the possibility of booking a multi-course menu in stages in advance … However, we did not want to be limited in terms of time and stopped as we pleased.

The hike starts in Flims, leads past Lake Cauma and along the Rhine Gorge you get to Conn. A good restaurant awaits you here, but you should definitely reserve a table around lunchtime in the summer months. After a short detour to the Il Spir viewing platform (fantastic view of the Rhine Gorge, also known as the Grand Canyon of Switzerland) you will reach Lake Crestasee. It goes back over the impressive Felsbach Gorge to Flims … or as in our case … back to Lake Cauma, for a final jump into the cool water.

Best travel time:
Every season has its advantages. We definitely want to discover the winter landscape around Lake Cauma. However, the months June to September are recommended for swimming.
