I dare to say that Dubrovnik as a travel destination makes every “Game of Thrones” fan’s heart beat faster. I also watched all 8 seasons completely captivated and excited. However, Dubrovnik is so much more than just the filming location of this successful series.
Here I have put together my personal top 5 for you 😍
1. A WALK ON DUBROVNIK’S CITY WALLS
I’ll give you a few helpful tips:
- Be sure to book your tickets for the city walls online in advance. You save yourself waiting in line at the checkout.
- The early bird catches the worm. In this case it is worth getting up earlier. The city walls are one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions and therefore quickly become overcrowded. I recommend visiting between 8 and 9 a.m. in high season.
- Don’t forget to wear a hat and take water with you, you are constantly exposed to the sun.
- You’ll find great photo opportunities on every corner – so have your camera handy.
2. A BOAT TOUR TO THE ELAPHITES
The Elaphite Islands are the name given to the enchanting group of islands off the southern Dalmatian coast. Of the 13 small islands, only 3 are inhabited: Šipan, Lopud and Koločep.
Ferries to the 3 main islands run regularly from Dubrovnik. However, day trips with excursion boats of all sizes are also offered on every corner, from speed boats to large sailing ships. We decided on a private boat tour with our own skipper because it gave us a little more flexibility and we were also able to avoid the large crowds of tourists.
3. JOIN A GAME OF THRONES TOUR
One thing straight away… this tour is definitely not only interesting for Game of Thrones fans. The tour guide gives you a lot of information about the history of Dubrovnik, as well as answers to all kinds of questions about Dubrovnik. But get an impression for yourself with our video 😉
4. EXPLORE BABIN KUK – LAPAD PENINSULA
The Babin Kuk district on the Lapad peninsula is known for its chic hotels and beach clubs.
We stayed at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel, which is located in the most beautiful place on the peninsula. There is a bus station directly in front of the hotel, which takes you quickly to Dubrovnik city center.
We loved our daily walks along the coast. In the north you stroll past Cava Beach, the Copacabana Beach Club, the Beach Bar Ponat all the way to Port Gruž. In the south you will find a few hotels and restaurants until you reach the tourist town of Lapad with its beach section.
5. ENJOY A DAY ON LOKRUM ISLAND
The small island of Lokrum is located right in front of the old town of Dubrovnik. The ferry crossing and entry to the island cost 27 euros (as of 04/24). You can either buy tickets directly in the harbor or book one of the numerous excursions in and around Dubrovnik, which include the island of Lokrum.
We visited the island as part of the Game of Thrones tour. We were able to visit a large part of the island. However, if you want to walk around the entire island in peace and also go swimming, you should take a whole day for it.
The ferries leave from the old town harbor every 30 minutes and the crossing takes around 20 minutes.
Here you can find more useful information about the island and also our YouTube video about Lokrum Island.
