For me, Melbourne is a city that you fall in love with at second glance π As I have already emphasized in my Sydney blog, in our opinion Sydney is hard to beat π but Melbourne should not be underestimated at all.
Compared to Sydney, Melbourne could be described as a little more relaxed, alternative and more European. Art or a hidden rooftop bar can be found on every corner. The culinary variety is also worth mentioning.
From the Southbank district, you have a great view of the city skyline. In addition, the promenade along the Yarra River invites you to take long walks. Here you will find (as almost everywhere in this city) a lot of restaurants and bars.
You should definitely plan a detour to the famous Hoisier Lane. To be honest, if you don’t look specifically for it, hardly a tourist gets lost in this somewhat dark and narrow alley π It is completely adorned with graffiti and very popular for photo shoots – an important part of Melbourne’s street art culture.
Federation Square, Flinders Street Station, Queen Victoria Market and St. Patrick’s Cathedral are typical sights, which of course we also explored on a city walk.

Since we are always very sporty on our travels, we decided to rent bikes for an afternoon and take a trip to Melbourne’s coast (Princes Pier & St. Kilda). At the beginning we tried a bit naively to find the way without a map or GPS π It wasn’t that easy and so we cycled a few EXTRA kilometers π but well, we had time …

Unfortunately, we took very little photos in Melbourne, but you can get a very good impression of this city in our inspiration video π

More tips / recommendations:
Melbourne is easy to explore on foot. Just go for a walk, this is the best way to discover the beauty of the city and the street art.
A bike tour in the city can be quite dangerous, consider the heavy traffic in a big city and the left-hand traffic that takes getting used to. Either you stay in the area around the Yarra River, there are many bike paths here, or you take the direct route to the coast and make sure that you leave the city behind you.
Southbank is popular for its many restaurants, shops, entertainment and cultural offerings.
Melbourne’s alternative and creative scene is at home in the Fitzroy district.
Collingwood is the center of Melbourne’s music scene and popular for nightlife. There are plenty of lively restaurants, bars, and second-hand stores on Smith Street.
