I could only vaguely remember Siena. When I was 15, I spent a few days in Tuscany with my school class. At that time, however, my interest in medieval cities was still very limited 😉 The only thing I remembered was the completely overpriced cappuccino at the Piazza del Campo 🤣
About 20 years later, however, this city has left a lasting impression. Not only because of its beauty and history, but also because we ate the best tiramisu there ever 😋
There are basically 2 parts of the city where most of the people hang around.
The Piazza del Campo is the city’s landmark and forms the center. Tourists as well as locals like to linger here a little. From the piazza, 11 narrow streets lead into the city. Twice a year the “Palio di Siena” (horse race) takes place there.
The area around the Cathedral of Siena is equally popular. The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta in Siena sits majestically on the highest point of the city hill, so that the view automatically falls on this imposing building.
Since we are not museum visitors or church fans, we did not take a guided tour of the cathedral, but I have to admit that this cathedral actually has something magical about it.

Our personal opinion about Siena:
- a MUST on every Tuscany tour
- charming ancient city
Best travel time:
We recommend spring and autumn. In summer it can get very hot and often crowded with tourists.
Restaurant recommendation:
